THE PLOT THUS FAR
The Sportys is a DVD series featuring a team of lovable animated characters being taught about baseball (such as strike vs. ball and fair vs. foul), teamwork and sportsmanship by the voice of Academy Award nominated actor Michael Clark Duncan as “Stitch” the ball. The series will educate kids ages 3-11 about the fundamentals of baseball in an entertaining and fun way. The series connects kids with the characters and stories so they will have a great time watching and will truly learn what baseball is all about. This first DVD will be followed by additional exciting and informative videos for other sports.

WHAT WE THOUGHT
Michael Clarke Duncan is amazing as the voice of Stitch the baseball. Stitch finds a group of kids (the Sportys) just playing in the backyard and convinces them to give baseball a try. "No, you don't have to be big to play baseball," he tells them. First he teaches them the bases' names and then teaches them how to run the bases. Not too soon, the mean boys show up to take over the field. Stitches' idea is that they play for the field. Stitch floats around the baseball diamond as the games umpire and Sportys' manager.

Very clearly and simply, Stitch explains how you can get people out. As the Sportys manager, Stitch then assigns them positions. As the game ensues, Stitch teaches the strike zone, balls and strikes, fouls, homeruns, double plays, sacrifice bunts, and of course take me out to the ball game.

As the Sportys fall behind 6-0 in the first innings, Stitch brings out some of the softer sports skills, "Being good at sports does not mean you are a good sport." The kids learn that hard work and practice will make them better, never giving up means you are still in the game, and you need to back each other up.
The DVD does great work with not that many supplementals. But, you do get to see a rather intelligent DVD target the 3-11 year old crowd. Nothing is more exciting than to watch an educational DVD that doesn't talk down to kids. That's what you've got here and it's a winner.
